SHOP HISTORY
Welcome to Central Coast Surfboards, first in the water since 1975.
CCS had its origins in the dormitories of the local university, Cal Poly, when founder Mike Chaney and two other fellow surfers decided to provide surfing and skating products to the local community of surfers. At that time there were no surf shops in the area and it was necessary to travel hundreds of miles to see any kind of selection of surfboards, wetsuits, and related supplies. Shortly thereafter, a small shop was started in the outskirts of downtown San Luis Obispo and was received with modest success.
In 1978, the shop was doing well enough to warrant a change of location and CCS began doing business on a larger scale in downtown San Luis Obispo. The expanded nature of the business led to other opportunities including international surfboard exporting, sailboats, windsurfing, snowboards and men's and women's apparel.
In the 80's, Central Coast Surfboards expanded its retail knowledge to mail-order and began selling product on a worldwide level.
CCS has remained core to its surfing roots supporting local surfers and skaters since day one. Sam George, Dave Parmenter, Cole Simler, Alistair Craft, Terrence McNulty, Chris Burke, Sara Gearhardt, Carl Holm, Doug Smith, Russ Pope, and Nate Tyler are just a few of the CCS notables that have gone on to do great things in the surfing world.
Original founder, Mike Chaney can still be found in the shops helping customers find that perfect solution to their surfing needs. But more importantly, he still passionately seeks out perfect surf on a local and global level. Throw in a little heli-boarding in perfect powder and he just may be our longest pure "product tester
